Woah! Let's see! What I know is what is said on Wikipedia.org;
Life inside of the major tree called Pern as presented in the novels resembles a pre-industrial society with lords, holds, harpers (musicians, entertainers, and teachers), and dragons, with the occasional examples of higher technology (like flamethrowers, telegraph, chemical fertilizers, and powerful microscopes and telescopes).
Pernese people are described as belonging to four basic groups: Weyrfolk (including Dragonriders) who live in the Weyrs, the Holders who live in the Holds (cities, towns and farms), the crafters who live in Crafthalls (or are assigned to work their crafts in certain Holds), and the Holdless who have no permanent home (including traders, displaced Holders, and brigands).
One of the main threats to Pernese civilization in the series is Thread, which is described as a mycorrhizoid spore that periodically rains down on the planet due to the orbit of the Red Star. The Red Star is set out to be a rogue planet in the Rukbat system. The Red Star, characterized as a "Sedna-class inner Oort cloud object", has a 250 Turn (or Pernese year) elliptic orbit around its sun. Thread can reach the planet Pern for about 50 Turns while the Red Star is at perihelion. Thread is described in this series as an agent that consumes organic material at a voracious rate, including crops, animals, and any humans in its path.
The Pernese use intelligent firebreathing dragons and their riders to fight Thread. The riders have a telepathic bond with their dragons, formed by Impression at the dragon's hatching. Later books deal with the initial colonization of Pern and the creation of the dragons through genetic manipulation. The lengthy (over two millennia) time period covered by the series as a whole allows room for new stories and characters, explored by each new novel released by the authors. Which, in Valid-Speak amounts to... Weyrfolk - Theyy are the Dragonriders (And dragons) and those who live in the Weyrs. QUESTION! Weyvrs are independent of Holds right? O.e Harpers (I'm sorrie. D= I thought I saw this some where. -headdesk- it was on Wiki, meh stewpit self) are musicians, entertainers, and teachers. And as Shori worded excellently: "Harper is a person who sings and writes ballads about events that happen on pern. They are some of the smartest people in all of pern and teach the children of the weyr their learning ballads. They also know how to play insterments and do other musically related things." Holders - They! live in towns and stuff. =D NORMAL PEOPLE! Where... if the town is big enough there are nobles and stuff? Are there Kingdoms w/ Kings and stuff? Crafters - Like... blacksmiths? Woodworkers? Theyy work in CraftHalls (what are those? Like... just a special place inside a Hold or a Weyrn?) Holdless - Nomads! Traders, gypsies, ect. =] Can these people become dragonriders? =x I think so... Thread - Posion sort of? Bad stuff that comes from Red Star and kills stuff. e.e The dragons (and theee Flitt and the firebirds?) are used to combat the Thread? They... consume it? Idk. And how do they... protect their riders from Thread while in contact with it? O.O Impression - The imprint that a dragon (firebird, or Flitt) and their rider have when the dragon, firebird, or flitt is born? =D This decides if they are 'meant to be' together? Dragon - Self explanatory. Flitt - Fire lizards! Firebirds - Self explanatory. Candidate - Someone who wants to become a Rider, and knows that they want to be?
SO! Dragons, firebirds and flitts are very important to the people of Pern. =] But... dragons, firebirds, and flitts are rare, right? I mean there aren't fiftybajillion but it isn't like 'one in a million'?
Then we have the whole... Impression bit? -biteslip- Some where in the deep blue yonder there is a rider for every dragon, flitt, and firebird, yuh? And... we find out who that 'person' is during hatching? The dragon, flitt, or firebird hatches for their 'rider'? =x Or go to their rider, or...? Snugglebear also told me that my Harper could be in the stands and her (or his) dragon could possibly have come to her/him? =x Soo... When eggs hatch (dragon, firebird, or flitt) it's... sort of 'put on display'? A 'grand cemermony'? What happens after the dragon, firebird, or flitt and the rider meet?
Can a person reject becoming a rider? Once they become a rider to they become part of a Weyr? =] Are... dragons, firebirds, and flitts all in the same Weyr?
Also! Tell me more about the heirachy in the Weyr? O>O Bit confusing. Does the color of the dragon, firebird, or flitt decide it's rank? Do ranks ever change?
AND! For a blue dragon! The rider must beee a male, homosexual or bisexual? =]
ALSO! In the firebird section, under the black firebird, "These Fire-Birds will only chase the flock queens." I read similar stuff regarding the dragons, what does this mean? That those are the ones they... tend to mate with or...?
SPEAKING OF MATES! -laughs- Let's get this romantic gooey stuff out of the way. xD Is it pretty much 'whatever'? Or... are their rules and policies in Pern that says 'You are this so you must love this'? And how are Riders regarded? Do peopleee look up to them? Frown at them?
OH! AND WHAT IS! a Flitter? O>O
anddd I have plenty of other questions I can't remember. e.e Lemme read some more and no doubt I'll have tons!

Holds to Weyr: Holds are independent of the weyr, but they look to the weyr for protection. Holds tithe to the weyr for protection from thread. Holds are ran by Lord holders and Ladies. Weyrs are ran by Weyrleaders and Weyrwomen.
Tithe: What the holds give to the Weyr for protection. This is usually food, crafted objects, and such things as that.
Search: A search is when a dragon rider and his dragon goes to the holds and searches for candidates for a dragon hatching. Searches are usually only done when there is a dragon clutch on the sands.
Lord/Lady Holders: These are what would be considered much like the lords and ladies of old. They are the leader of their hold and they make sure nothing goes wrong. When there is a issue in the hold, people go to the Lord holder. Holders are not chosen by the people of the hold. They are born into their station.
Crafthalls: Crafthalls are places that people go to study a certain subject. They can be found within a hold or within the weyr itself. This is usually decided by the supplies needed for the craft.
Holdless Impressing: Yes, if they are searched to become a candidate, they can impress a dragon. Not all Holdless are bad and even some of the bad ones get searched.
Dragons and Thread: The dragons are the protects of the Weyrs and Holds. They breath fire that destroys the spores that fall from the red star. Dragons do not eat thread! It WILL kill them if hit by to much of the menace. Though golds are the most praised of all of the dragons, they do NOT breath fire. They do help fight thread though. (Read info on the gold dragons to get more info on this.) Dragons usually don't let thread get close enough to their riders for them to be stuck by thread, though this does happen on rare occasions.
Fire-Birds and Thread: Fire-Birds do eat thread, but they can't eat to much. If they do eat to much they will turn to ash. It is very rare that a Fire-Bird can last a who thread fall, but this has not been proven. This is only thought do to what happened to the giant white Fire-Bird, that save the weyr, ashed after she clutched.
Fire-lizards and Thread: Fire-lizards do not fight thread! They have other chores that they can do to help the weyr though. They usually do not breath fire, but when they get a certain firestone, the fire-lizard firestone. They can produces small flames.
Firestone: Firestone is what dragons chew so that they can breath fire. This stone is very dangerous and are usually mined by very skilled miners or the shunned. These stones can not be touched by water! If they are touched by water, they will produce a deadly gas and, if touched by enough water, explode. Dragons do not like eating these stone, but they deal. This stone is also known to cause infertility in dragons. This is the reason gold dragons so not chew firestone.
Impressions: Dragons- Dragons are born then they chose someone they wish to impress to. This person is usually much like themselves or someone that needs them. Usually, a person can be impressed to one dragon at a time, but it is not sure if a person can impress more then one. If a dragon doesn't find the person they need during the hatching, they will go /between/ and never come back.
Fire-lizards- Not as picky as dragons. After they hatch, they will impress to the first person that feeds them. There are wild Fire-lizards as well, but they are not very kindly towards others.
Fire-Birds: These creatures impress their bonded empathetically. They wait until someone with the same personality as them to touch the shell of their egg and then hatch to said person. Once they are hatched they have the ability to control the heat of their flame, but in the egg they have no means of doing so and, when a person touches the egg, they get burnt.
Candidates: These are people that are chosen out of many other that have the possibility of becoming dragon riders. They don't have to want to impress a dragon, but if they do impress, they usually turn out being very happy about it.
Dragon/flitt/Fire-Lizard numbers:
Dragons- The numbers of dragons in a weyr is dependent on the weyr itself. At the moment, the amount of dragons in Akum Weyr is very small do to the fact that a plague had stuck the weyr and the weyr had not been prepared for thread when it had came. The dragon numbers is also Dependant on how many egg-layers are in the Weyr.
Flitts- Once again, the same things that apply for dragons, also apply for flitts. There tends to be quite a few fire-lizards in a weyr at once, but this is also Dependant on egg-layers.
Fire-Birds- These creatures were thought extinct for a time, but these thoughts were changed when the white fire-bird appeared and layed the 50 eggs that now lay on the sands. This is the biggest clutch known to Akum Weyr and Fire-Birds are native to Akum. Fire-Birds can only found in Akum weyr!
Watch-wher- Watch-whers, Nocturnal reptile distantly related to dragons, is also a very important and very rare creature. They have been thought to have been extinct at one time as well, but this is not so. This nocturnal creatures are rarely ever seen and they are very useful creatures as well.
((Not finished! I will be continuing this when I get back though. I am going for a fast walk and thought you should look over what I have written down so that you might add questions if you need to.))
